tend to believe that student who is dressed for success have a better chance in
achieving their academic goals, the others would say the uniform has nothing to
do with the learning process. There are many pros and cons. School uniform is
one major argument often posted by students and parents.

The major
argument against school uniforms is that they violate the students First
Amendment rights. Most Americans believe that freedom of speech is not the only
way to express themselves. Therefore, every person in the country should not be
restricted from wearing what they want. These convictions are based on the
First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which states:

   Implementing a policy for school uniforms not only
decreases violence but will also help families save financially. In past years,
families have spent a tremendous amount on head to toe clothing items. “the
International Mass Retail Association (IMRA}, polled its members – stores such
as Walmart, Kmart, and Burlington Coat Factory – and found that
students/parents are buying only school supplies in August and buying clothes
later in the year or year round. They want to see what their friends are
wearing. Retailers also said that young shoppers tend to buy clothes as they
need and want them. (Hanson, ‘1996, p.43) Students need to be reminded that
school is about getting an education not about setting fashion trends amongst
their friends. When schools enforce a uniform policy, they will lessen the
burden that many families face regarding continuous purchasing of new clothing
items in order for the student to ‘remain in style’. Parents would end up
spending less each year because they would only need to worry about purchasing
the necessary uniform requirements. “A recent IMRA poll of consumers found
that 52 percent of those surveyed favored government proposals requiring
uniforms for public school children because parents want to save money.”
(Hanson, 1996, p.43) For the families that still would struggle making these
purchases, the school district or businesses within the surrounding areas could
help by donating the funds in order to supply the necessary uniforms to help
every student succeed.

   All in all, after thoroughly reading the research, the
benefits of a uniform policy outweigh the negatives heavily. With implementing
a uniform policy throughout schools, especially in school districts with high
crime rates, well see a slight decrease in crimes amongst students. Linking
public school uniforms to the deterrence of violence, there are informal
statistics presented by school districts that claim a public school uniform
policy has helped their school get back to the basics of educating it’s
students. The issue of accepting such a policy would not be up to the school
size but whether or not the families of such students would willingly accept
the policy. It will greatly help and hopefully sway many if financial
assistance is offered. The research heavily supports the notion of a uniform
policy.
