IntroductionThe book “Critical chain” has a subtitle as “A business novel”, and that is how it is. The book appeared to have a lot of conversation written with very few pictures. The “theoretical concept” has been written very nicely in the form of a novel.Core IdeaAccording to us the book talk about the excuses given by everyone for the delay of the project. It talks about how the top management blames external factors while the employees blame the internal politics and management. The estimate is judged at 80% confidence point, i.e. the probability of completing a project is 80%The storyThe book is about an associate professor named Rick Silver who is struggling to make it in the academic world. He is a very good teacher, but he needs publications. His area is project management and he want the articles to make a difference in this field. The theories that he had applied to project management are not that effective and projects are not cost efficient. The work is moving at very slow pace, but he gets his motivation when he is assigned to teach a course in an Executive MBA course.During the course, professor Silver and his students develop the concept of the “CriticalChain”. The teaching of professor Silver is conversation with the students aboutdifferent topics. The students get homework to do and in this course the homework tasksbecomes case studies for the theories that they develop in the classes. He is also helped by thefact that three of his students are involved in a project at their company to develop a way tocut product development time.Throughout the book different concepts of project management are covered. The inspiration for the critical chain comes from the “Theory of Constraints”, which is taught by another professor in production management. Theory of Constraints identifies the bottleneck or constraint, exploits it and then subordinates all other activities to that bottleneck. The same concept is shown throughout the book to apply to project management as well onseveral levels. As mentioned the teaching and development of the “Critical Chain” theory is the mainstory. At the same time stories about Rick Silvers personal life, problems with economyat the university and some cases from the companies where the students apply the theory, runin parallel. The economy problem almost makes the promotion of Rick impossible, but thenew discoveries he makes in the course and the support it gets from the industry, supports his survival.ReviewAs mentioned in the introduction the book is written as a novel to generate the interest of the readers. This form makes it very pleasant to read. The topics are presented as the conversations and the discussion professor Silver has with his students, colleagues andpeople from business Also the discussions concern a lot of examples and analogies whichmakes it easy for the reader to see the application of the theories. There are parallel stories which are more enjoyable, and they do not disturb the real story. The book content mostly talks about project management and critical chain. Having a prior background from the Project management course was enough to understand the problems and enjoy the book. Through the classes of professor Silver and the problems of the students the reader is introduced to the Theory of constraints, critical path and critical chain. Different topics are explained through the answers to questions that the students address. Other concepts such as the “Triple Constraint” of project management are covered. The lectures of the class identify the problems their projects are having, and from that thetheory is developed. The classes usually ends with some consensus about the problems oftenstated as professor Silvers summary of the lecture. The statements are more of a conceptualerrors that occur in project management. An example is: “There is no way to achieve good throughput performance through good local performance” By that one means that one must optimise the system, which implies identifying the bottleneck. The book serves its purpose as an inspiration and introduction to the problems and solutions. The work was very inspiring to read, and we are looking forward to learn more. The method appears effective and with the additional tools we have learned about on how to discover when the project is eating into the buffer, it appears even more suitable. We will try our best to structure the future work in such a way that we identify the necessary tasks to reach it.The method used by professor Silver is very intriguing according to us.
