Social behaviors, and more in order to fit in

Social conformity has driven people to change their beliefs, behaviors, and more in order to fit in with society. In Jane Austen’s popular novel, social conformity is represented in economic status, gender, and love. At the first ball in the novel, Pride and Prejudice Charlotte tells Elizabeth, “Happiness in Marriage is entirely a matter of chance”, by this Charlotte meant that she was convinced that the happiness in marriage is based on the partners’ personality and not on his or her economic status. Elizabeth responded by saying ” You make me laugh, Charlotte; but it is not sound. You know it is not sound, and that you would never act in this way yourself”. In context what she means by saying “it is not sound” is that she believes it is not right that she’s gonna marry Mr. Collins a person of incompatible personalities and interest as her and act like she can be happy with him when the likelihood of that is low. Elizabeth then is worried about her friend Charlotte when she finds out that she really is gonna marry Mr.Collins in hope of a happy life. As predicted by Elizabeth, Charlotte doesn’t “act in this way” herself. Charlotte then completely changes her thoughts on marriage after realizing that her romantic love life will never be fulfilled by stating that she was never a romantic person. “I am convinced that my chance of happiness with him is as fair as most people can boast on entering the marriage state” ultimately Charlotte came to the realization that maybe her romantic love life wasn’t gonna happen but other women would wish to be in her place just because Mr. Collins provides her with a home and a great social and economic status that many other women hope to achieve. Overall the cost of conforming to society was that Charlotte had to get rid of her thoughts of mutual love and romantic wishes because she was socially and economically stable thanks to her marriage with Mr. Collins and it was something that many other women in her place would’ve hoped to achieve.
